407 Killed By COVID-19 In The Last 24 Hours

SAO PAULO (AP) – The Brazilian Health Ministry confirmed on Thursday the death of 407 people by COVID-19 in the last 24 hours, the highest number in the country for a single day. The total number of deaths related to the coronavirus in the South American nation rose to 3,313.

Brazil has confirmed almost 50,000 infections, but medical and political specialists consider that the real number is much higher.

More than half of the deaths have been registered in the wealthy and populous state of Sao Paulo, the epicenter of the pandemic in the country. Sao Paulo Mayor Bruno Covas stated that “the worst is yet to come.”

Health systems in the cities of Manaus, Recife and Fortaleza are about to collapse.

Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro is in favor of taking a less restrictive stance in his fight against the coronavirus and hopes that the states will lift the confinement restrictions in the coming days. However, most governors and mayors ignore the recommendations of the far-right president.
