8 Ecuadorian Fans Die From Bus Accident In Peru

LIMA (AP) – At least eight fans of the Ecuadorian Barcelona Sporting Club died on Saturday when the bus transporting them back to their country fell into an abyss in Peru.

The chief of the road police, Colonel Erlyn Silva, told The Associated Press that the vehicle of the Divino Niño company, of Ecuadorian license plate, was return ing to Guayaquil with fans who attended the match for the Copa Libertadores between Barcelona SC on Thursday in Lima and the Peruvian Sporting Cristal.


The accident occurred during the early morning in an area of ​​the Pacific coast of the Piura region, when the bus fell into an abyss. Around 30 injured were taken to a local clinic. The causes of the accident are unclear and the police investigate the case.

Despite being defeated on Thursday in Lima by 2-1, Barcelona SC agreed to phase 3 of the continental tournament because in the first leg in Guayaquil the Ecuadorians beat the Peruvians 4-0.

In 2018, another 12 fans of Barcelona SC died on a highway in their country when the bus carrying them was overturned.
