Clinton, Mississippi – A woman and her six children died after burning their home in Mississippi on Saturday morning, authorities said.

The fire broke out shortly after midnight in Clinton, outside Jackson, fire chief Jeff Blackledge told local press.

The oldest of the victims was 33 years old and the youngest one, said the official. The names were not disclosed.

The father, who survived, tried to rescue the family, said Mark Jones, municipal communications director. He was hospitalized with burns, smoke inhalation, cuts and bruises.

The local fire office investigates the causes, Jones said.
