Alabama: 7 Arrested For Cockfighting

VERBENA, Alabama, USA (AP) – Seven people will face charges of animal cruelty and conspiracy for running a large illegal cockfighting and poultry business, federal prosecutors reported.

The Justice Department announced the charges on Friday. Prosecutors said the defendants maintained a “cockpit” with seating for about 150 people for three years. Some are accused of raising and selling fighting cocks.

The fight or cockfight is a violent spectacle in which two roosters fight to the death.

The charges against the residents of Verbena include violation of the animal welfare law and criminal association to run an illegal gambling business. If guilty, they face a maximum penalty of five years in prison.
