The poll showed that 62% of respondents want the former president’s trial to end before the November election and begin before the Republican Party primaries.

What should happen to Trump if he is found guilty? 43% of those surveyed indicated that the former president should go to prison. 22% indicated that Trump should not suffer “any punishment”, 18% said that he should receive probation and 17% indicated that he should only face a financial penalty.

A bipartisan break

The POLITICO poll found that 73% of Democrats believe Trump should go to prison if convicted by the Supreme Court of mishandling classified documents compared with 16% of Republicans and 33% of independents.

Although it is true that the former president gained support in the polls after the accusations against him became known, the new poll suggests that Republicans have not changed their opinion regarding Trump’s political campaign.

While 21% of Republican respondents said the federal indictment for mishandling classified documents made them more likely to support Trump, 23% said it made them less likely and 50% said it had no impact.

The results indicate that the numbers against Trump’s innocence could worsen as Americans learn more about the federal charges against the former president.

A third of those surveyed said they are not familiar with the allegations in either case.

Federal charges against Trump

The US Department of Justice revealed documents implicating Donald Trump in 37 federal crimes. Of these, 31 are related to the “deliberate withholding” of national defense information. Conspiracy to commit obstruction and false statements would be the other charges against the Republican.

The former president intentionally withheld 300 classified documents, which were removed from the White House and taken to his property at Mar-a-Lago.

The events occurred in January 2021, when the Republican left the presidency. Prosecutors handling the case indicated that Donald Trump “tried to obstruct the government’s efforts to recover the documents.”
