LONDON (AP) – Arsenal forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang revealed Thursday that he was hospitalized this week for malaria.
Aubameyang said he contracted the disease when he served an international call with Gabon last month.
“I am already feeling better every day, thanks to excellent doctors detecting and treating the virus quickly,” Aubameyang said in a text he posted on his Instagram account, attached to a photo of himself in the hospital bed.
“I hadn’t felt quite right the last few weeks, but I’m going to come back stronger than ever!” He added.
After his involvement with Gabon, Aubameyang made two appearances for Arsenal – against Liverpool in the Premier League on April 3 and against Slavia Prague in the Europa League last week.
He did not play Sheffield United in the league on Sunday and was not cited to face Slavia in the second leg of the quarterfinals on Thursday.
