Bad Stamp On Official Santa Fe, New Mexico Stamp

SANTA FE, New Mexico, USA (AP) – A tick on the official seal of the capital of the United States’ most Hispanic state is in the wrong place.

A reporter recently noticed the error when he saw Santa Fe’s full name on the official website of the New Mexico government, the Santa Fe New Mexican newspaper reported Wednesday.

The seal that appears on the website carries the official name of the city: The Villa Real de la Santa Fé de San Francisco de Asís. But in this case the accent comes in the first “s” of Assisi, instead of the “i”.

Even Mayor Alan Webber knows that the accent on the “s” is “not good.”

“The accent always goes over a vowel, never over a consonant,” said Webber. “I learned that from my Spanish teacher.”

Nor is an accent on “faith” used.

Santa Fe is one of the settlements in the United States with a long-standing Hispanic history.
