Betances Goes To Surgery And Misses The Rest Of The Season

ATLANTA (AP) – Reliever Dellin Betances will undergo surgery on his right shoulder and miss the rest of the season, after pitching just once this year with the New York Mets.

Betances allowed one run in one inning on April 7, in a game against Philadelphia. The following day, he was placed on the 60-day disabled list due to a right shoulder impingement.

Luis Rojas, Dominican manager of the Mets, said Wednesday that his compatriot “has played with some pain in his shoulder.”

As part of his recovery program, Betances had a 19.24 ERA with two minor league teams.

“His presence in the bullpen and his pitching experience in New York is always good,” Rojas said. “It is unfortunate to learn of this.”

The 33-year-old Betances was a four-time All-Star with the Yankees. He pitched only once in 2019 due to injuries and signed a one-year, $ 10.5 million deal with the Mets.

That agreement included an alternative for the player to renew.

Betances was 0-1 with a 7.71 ERA in 15 games with the Mets in 2020. He exercised his $ 6 million option this year, but has again suffered a serious injury.
