Carapaz Likes To Continue To Rule Ineos With Giro

Milan (AP) — Ineos Grenadier is aiming for Ecuador’s Richard Carapaz to win his favorite Giro d’Italia in the Italian round for the third time in a row.

At the beginning of the three Grand Tour in 2022, the two Slovenians who have dominated cycling in recent years, Primož Roglič and Tadej Pogačar, are missing.

The two former Giro champions Egan Bernal of Colombia and Tao Geoghegan Heart of England will not compete either. Both Ineos riders were excluded, first due to injury and second due to illness.

But a strong team is Carapaz, the 2019 champion.

When Carapaz won his first Grand Tour in Ecuador and raced for Movistar, this was the only edition in the last four years that Ineos (or former Team Sky name) didn’t win in Italy. ..

The 28-year-old Carapaz won the championship in last year’s Tokyo Olympic road race, finishing third in the Tour de France and second in 2020 Buerta a Espana.

However, Carapaz has not participated in the competition since March and instead chooses to train at altitude in his home country. He comes across two riders who previously had pink jerseys: Vincenzo Nibali (2013 and 2016) and Tom Dumoulin (2017).

“Trying to win the second tour is a new goal I have set for myself and a very personal challenge,” Carapaz said Wednesday. “I pondered it, and we are facing the first big date.

“I think that’s a great goal. In 2019 I shared the lead role and now I have my own opportunity.”

Other candidates

Carapaz is my favorite, but he isn’t expected to dominate. Several rivals will appear to fight him towards his final goal in Verona.

João Almeida was one of the revelations at his Grand Tour debut in 2020, leading Giro for 15 days and, three days after the last, let go of the pink jersey to take fourth place.

Almeida, who was sixth last year, won the Giro on his third attempt and moved to UAE Team Emirates with the aim of winning the Grand Tour for the first time as a Portuguese in the process.

“Richard is one of the best riders … he’s my favorite. We keep an eye out for everyone, especially Ricardo,” Almeida said.

Simon Yates is also trying to avenge his previous disappointment at Giro. Briton led Giro for 13 days in 2018, giving up on the mountain and finishing in 21st place. He finished in 3rd place last year and redeemed himself.

Don’t lose sight of Dumoulin, Mikel Landa in Spain, Jai Hind Sas in Australia and Miguel Angel Lopez in Colombia.

Start in Budapest

Two years behind the original schedule, the first three stages of Giro will be held in Hungary from Friday.

Giro was scheduled to start in Hungary in 2020, but the pandemic rescheduled the race in October and started the route in Sicily.

The race will have its first break on May 9th, allowing runners to travel to Italy.

The 2022 Giro has two time stages, covering the shortest 26 km (16 miles) since 1962.

In addition to 6 mountain finishes and 51,000 meters of climbs, 7 stages for the sprinter will be contested over 3 weeks. The first big rise will be the fourth stage, Mount Etna.
