Death Toll Rises To 36 After Miami Building Collapse

Rescue authorities at the scene where the Champlain Towers South apartment building collapsed in Surfside, Miami, began to lose hope by announcing that they have not detected any signs of life in the rubble, while revealing the discovery of eight new victims, which increased the total of those killed by the tragedy to 36.

Search and rescue personnel in yellow safety helmets and blue uniforms have been searching the rubble for 13 days as rain and winds from the outer bands of Tropical Storm Elsa, which is approaching the state of Florida, complicated the work.

Rescuers continue to search for open spaces that may have formed after the partial collapse of the building that could house people who survived the initial collapse on June 24.

“We continue to search in the most active and aggressive way possible. Unfortunately, we have not seen or detected positive signals. The key point is that we have not detected pockets or open spaces, ”explained Miami-Dade County Fire Chief Alan Cominsky.

For his part, Raide Jadallah, assistant chief of the Miami-Dade Fire Department, announced the new death toll to the families of those affected during a closed-door meeting on Tuesday, according to a video posted on social networks. The official indicated that rescuers are trying to locate more victims.

Jadallah said there was a two-hour delay in the search efforts as a result of a series of thunderstorms. He added that workers have removed 5.5 million pounds of debris from the incident area.

Although authorities still describe the efforts as “search and rescue,” Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava noted that the families of those who remain missing are preparing to receive the news of “tragic deaths.”

“I think everyone will be ready when the time comes to move on to the next phase,” said Levine Cava, who warned that rescuers will use the same careful procedure to continue removing debris even after the operation shifts to body recovery.

“The reality is that they will not see any difference. We will carry out the searches with the same care and we will treat the bodies we find with the utmost respect, ”added the official.

No person has been rescued alive since the first hours after the collapse that occurred in the early morning of June 24, when most of the residents were asleep.
