As chairman of the House Oversight and Reform Committee, Cummings also directed multiple investigations into the president's government dealings, including those related to the president's family members serving in the White House.

Since then, Trump has launched strong criticism against the Democratic district that Cummings represented, which includes parts of Baltimore, a city he called "rodent infested disaster" where "no human being would want to live."

At that time, Cummings stated that government officials should stop making "hateful and incendiary comments" that only serve to divide and distract the nation from its real problems, including mass shootings and white supremacy.

"Those at the highest levels of government should stop invoking fear, use racist language and encourage reprehensible behavior," Cummings said in a speech at the National Press Club.
