A Democratic congressman who on Wednesday December 18, 2019 voted against the political trial to President Donald Trump said Thursday 19, in front of the president, that he will become Republican.

Jeff Van Drew, representative of the state of New Jersey, announced his change of party on a visit to Trump at the White House.

"Jeff will join the Republican party … It's great news," Trump said, smiling, in the Oval Hall. "We are very happy to have Jeff with us," he added.

Sitting next to the president, the Democratic parliamentarian assured the Republican millionaire "eternal support."

"I think it's just more tight to me," Van Drew said about the change of political side.

Van Drew, 66, was elected as a congressman in 2018 in a district that since 1995 had been represented by a Republican.

On Wednesday, in a historic vote, the lower house approved charges of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress against Trump, making him the third president in US history to be brought to political trial.

The decision to dismiss Trump or not is now in the hands of the Senate, which will carry out the trial against the president probably in January. The Upper House, where Republicans are the majority, is expected to exonerate the president from the charges against him.
