Two doctors from Rajavithi hospital in Bangkok, capital of Thailand, claim to have discovered a combination of drugs that is proven effective in the treatment of the new coronavirus 2019-nCoV originated at the end of last December in the Chinese city of Wuhan.

It is a mixture of a drug against influenza, oseltamivir, and two antivirals, lopinavir and ritonavir, used to treat Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV).


According to Thai doctors at a press conference on Sunday, several of the patients who had been hospitalized with severe symptoms showed a marked improvement, while a 70-year-old woman tested negative for coronavirus just 48 hours after the mixture was administered. .

“This is not the cure, but the patient’s condition has improved considerably. After testing positive for 10 days in our care, after applying this combination of medications, the test result became negative within 48 hours “said Kriangska Atipornwanich, a pulmonary care specialist at Rajavithi hospital, quoted by Reuters.

“The prognosis is good, but we still have to do more studies to determine that this can be a standard treatment,” he added.

According to local media, Thai doctors now plan to use the prescription to treat other infected patients. To date, the total number of confirmed cases in this Asian country is 19.

Meanwhile, the number of fatalities of the coronavirus 2019-nCoV worldwide rises to 362 (361 in China and 1 in the Philippines). More than 17,200 people are infected.
