EI previously confirmed the death of its leader in Baghdadi in a statement and assured that his replacement was Abu Ibrahim al Hashimi al Quraishi. Little is known about this new leader, whose name has rarely been mentioned as a possible successor in the various opportunities in which Baghdadi's death was falsely reported.

Baghdadi, who has led the Islamic State since 2014 and was the most wanted man in the world, died Sunday in a US special forces operation in Idlib province in northwestern Syria.

The Islamic State also confirmed the murder in another raid the day after the group's spokesman, Abu Hassan al Muhajir. In a statement, the jihadist group said its legislative and advisory body met after the death of its boss and "agreed" on a replacement.
