Donald Trump: USA "can't Lose" In a Trade War With Europe

The US president, Donald Trump, said Wednesday that the United States "cannot lose" in a hypothetical trade war with the European Union (EU), as demonstrated in its struggle with China.

"(With China) it has been shown that we cannot lose a war with tariffs. (…) In the case of the European Union we are earning 7,500 million. And Italy has a percentage to pay," Trump told a news conference joint with his Italian counterpart, Sergio Mattarella, in the White House.

Trump defended that the US "He is receiving a lot of money" thanks to his commercial strategy "for the first time in history." "Tremendous amounts of money in many different ways, including through tariffs," he said.

In his statements, Trump thanked Mattarella for his support in reaching a trade agreement between the United States. and the EU that "guarantees equal conditions for American workers", which it considers to be disadvantaged.

"I could solve this problem instantly, but it would be too hard. It would imply tariffs on European products entering this country and for now we will try to do so without it," he said.

Earlier this month, the United States obtained the approval of the World Trade Organization (WTO) to impose tariffs on European Union products by ruling in its favor in a dispute over subsidies to aircraft manufactured in the EU .

This Friday, the Trump Administration will begin to impose encumbrances on European Union assets worth 7.5 billion dollars, in retaliation for the illegal subsidies received by the European aircraft manufacturer Airbus.

US tariffs on European imports will affect a wide variety of products, from airplanes to clothing, wine, Scotch whiskey, olives and cheese, among others, with the United Kingdom, France, Spain and Germany being the most affected countries. (EFE)
