Animal rights activists pointed to Donald Trump Jr. after learning that he killed a sheep in danger of extinction in Mongolia, and that the authorities of that country issued him a hunting permit retroactively, which raised questions about whether he received a Special treatment.

The eldest son of the president of the United States, who has already been criticized for his hunting pastime, killed an Argali sheep during a trip in August, which he did with his son and accompanied by security agents from both countries, according to a report by ProPublica broadcast this Thursday.

With its giant and curved horns, that species is considered a national treasure of Mongolia, and the right to hunt it is controlled by a murky permit system subject to political and financial influence, according to experts cited by the US media.

ProPublica said the Mongol authorities issued an unusual permit to Trump Jr. on September 2, when he had already left the hunting region.

He then met privately with the country's president, Khaltmaa Battulga, before returning to the United States, according to an official cited in the report.

Kitty Block, president of the Humane Society, wrote in a blog that there are only 18 thousand Argali sheep left in the Mongolian desert, but between 2008 and 2018 American hunters imported 254 hunting trophies of the species from that Asian country.

"If Mongolia and other nations in the area continue to deliver these animals as prizes for the rich and well connected, there is no doubt that we will soon see the end of this animal in danger of extinction," he said.

Others said the Mongol government hoped to win Washington's favor.

"What are the chances that the Mongol government would have acted the same with someone who was not the son of the president of the United States?" Kathleen Clark, a professor specializing in legal ethics at the University of Washington in St Louis, told ProPublica.

Trump Jr. and his brother Eric are avid hunters and their photos posing with animals they killed, including an elephant, a buffalo and a leopard, resurfaced during the 2016 presidential campaign.
