GENEVA (AP) — Dynamo Kyiv’s surprise Champions League run came on Tuesday with an extra-time win over Sturm Graz in the competition’s third qualifying round.

The Ukrainian club is two games away from reaching a competitive group stage. They clash in the playoffs against Benfica in his next two weeks.

Goals from defender Kostiantin Vikhcharenko in the 97th minute and Viktor Tsihankov in the 112th minute gave Dynamo a 2-1 victory over Austria, giving them a 3-1 aggregate victory.

Dynamo’s four Champions League qualifying matches in the last 20 days are the only official matches played all season prior to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Ukrainian clubs are also reducing their squads as they have little chance of attracting football players from other countries.

In their second consecutive round of qualifying, the Dynamo needed a goal in extra time and a late goal in the second leg to advance.

Experienced coach Mircea Lucescu’s next challenge is against the Portuguese side. Dynamo was thus able to join Shakhtar Donetsk in the group stage of the tournament.

Shakhtar earned his ticket last season by sitting at the top of the Ukrainian Premier League until it ended due to war.

Dynamo will host Benfica in the first leg next week in Lodz, Poland, where they will play their home games in the European competition. Russian clubs are banned from participating in UEFA and FIFA tournaments.

Benfica beat Midjuran 7-2 on aggregate after winning 3-1 in Denmark on Tuesday.

PSV Eindhoven also needed a goal in extra time to win Monaco 3-2, 4-3 on aggregate. Luuk de Jong was the creator of his winning 109 target.

The 1988 European champions lost to Monaco in the 89th minute, but a goal from Mexican midfielder Erik Gutierrez equalized. With UEFA eliminating his away goal as a tiebreaker from last year, Monaco didn’t advance when they finished level 3-3 on aggregate after normal time.

PSV will face Rangers, who beat Belgium’s Union Saint-Giroise in the first leg. His 3–0 victory over Glasgow and a 3–2 aggregate victory gave Scotland his team the pass.

Union, Monaco, Sturm Graz and Midjuran advance to the group stage of the Europa League. The draw for that contest will be on his August 26th.

Sheriff was eliminated on Tuesday and will not return to the Group Stage. The debut from the previous season opened with Shakhtar and eventual champions Real his victory over Madrid.

The Moldovan monarchs lost 2-1 to Viktoria Plzen and beat the Czech champions 4-2 on aggregate.

Red Star Belgrade, reigns of the 1991 European Cup, defeated Pynik 2-0 in Armenia to make it 7-0 on aggregate.

Maccabi Haifa, who lost 2-0 to Apollon in Cyprus, are waiting for a Red Star in the playoffs. The Israeli club won the first leg, 4-0.
