Federal Authorities Investigate Vehicle With Possible Explosive Device Near Capitol

Washington – Authorities are investigating today, Thursday, a report of a possible explosive device in a vehicle in front of the Library of Congress in the federal Capitol district and evacuated the area around the building, two police officials reported to the Associated Press agency.

US Capitol Police said officers were “responding to a suspicious vehicle near the Library of Congress.” The building is close to the Capitol and the Supreme Court. Police have also evacuated the Cannon House office building. Congress is in recess this week.

A negotiator is heading to the scene to speak to the person inside the suspect vehicle, CNN reported.

Law enforcement officials said investigators at the scene were working to determine if the device was an operable explosive and if the man in the truck was holding a detonator. The authorities also sent snipers to position themselves in the surroundings.

The officials were not authorized to publicly discuss the matter and spoke on condition of anonymity.

The incident comes months after a homemade bomb was left at the headquarters of the Democratic National Committee and the Republican National Committee in Washington.

Among the security forces working in the operation are the Police of the District of Columbia, the Federal Investigations Bureau (FBI), as well as the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

The White House indicated that it is attentive to the situation.

The incident comes months after a homemade bomb was left at the headquarters of the Democratic National Committee and the Republican National Committee in Washington, a day before thousands of Donald Trump supporters stormed the US Capitol in January.
