Former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, accused of killing George Floyd, has been released from prison after posting a $ 1 million bond, the state Department of Prisons has confirmed.
Floyd, an African-American, died on May 25 when Chauvin pressed his neck, nailing his knee for several minutes while the victim repeated up to 20 times that he could not breathe. The officer kept his knee on Floyd’s neck even when he was knocked unconscious.
Chauvin and three other agents who participated in the operation were fired from the police force. Chauvin is charged with murder and other crimes. The other three are accused of helping and being complicit in the crime and have already been released from prison after posting a bail of $ 750,000 each.
Currently the four defendants are awaiting trial, possibly in March. The judge is studying a request to try them separately.
George Floyd’s death sparked anti-racism protests across the country and even outside the US.
