Halep Advances To Semis In Transylvania; Surprise Raducanu

CLUJ-NAPOCA, Romania (AP) – Romanian top seed Simona Halep advanced to the Transylvanian Open semifinals on Friday as US Open champion Emma Raducanu lost a match between teens in less than a hour.

Raducanu, 18, third-seeded, fell 6-2, 6-1 to 19-year-old Marta Kostyuk of Ukraine in a match in which the Briton battled her serve from start to finish. Raducanu committed seven double faults and won less than half the points in his service games, which Kostyuk used to reach his third semi-final of the season.

Kostyuk will look to advance to the first final of his career when he meets Halep, who easily edged compatriot Jacqueline Cristian 6-1, 6-1.

The second-seeded of the tournament, Anett Kontaveit, also had a smooth path to the semifinals, defeating Ukraine’s Anhelina Kalinina 6-3, 6-1 to reach her 13th consecutive indoor win, after lifting titles in Ostrava and Moscow.

The victory kept the Estonian and second-seeded in the fight for a ticket to the WTA Finals next month.

Kontaveit will face Sweden’s Rebecca Peterson, who for her part defeated Ukraine’s Lesia Tsurenko 6-2, 3-6, 6-3.
