Baton Rouge, Louisiana – Two deaths in the Baton Rouge area have now been attributed to Hurricane Ida, the Louisiana Department of Health said Monday.
With that, the death toll from the storm rose to 28. Ida made landfall in Louisiana on August 29 as a Category 4 hurricane.
The Health Department reported via Twitter that the East Baton Rouge Township Coroner’s Office reported the deaths of a 69-year-old man and an 85-year-old woman, both from excessive heat during a prolonged blackout.RELATED
The department added that 12 of the 28 deaths linked to Ida in Louisiana were due to heat.
In response to an email inquiry, the coroner’s office noted that the man passed away on September 6.
Coroner Shane Evans said the agency continues to review records and try to reach relatives of the 85-year-old woman, so she cannot provide further details.
