Basque Government sources confirm that Juan Diego will cease to be general director of the Basque Health Service (Osakidetza) this Friday. His replacement will be the Catalan doctor Rosa Pérez Esquerdo, according to ‘El Correo’. Diego, trusted by the lehendakari, Iñigo Urkullu, came to office at the end of 2018 to pacify an organization hit by the investigation of the irregularities in the medical oppositions in the spring of that year and to replace María Jesús Múgica.
However, during the months of the pandemic Diego has remained in the background despite being the head of the health system. He has not offered a single public appearance and his participation in events and meetings has been very limited, to the point that he was not part of the closest committee of the former Minister of Health, Nekane Murga. Official sources indicate that this responds to the fact that they have wanted to leave the spokesperson in the hands of doctors. This Thursday night he did participate in the meeting of the health emergency crisis table (LABI), which resulted in a recommendation for confinement in 25 Basque municipalities.RELATED
