Dallas Mavericks star Luka Doncic was fined Friday $35,000 for making a gold gesture at an umpire in the final seconds of a loss to Golden State.
Doncic approached the referee in Wednesday’s 127-125 loss by rubbing his fingers together with 1.7 seconds left in the game. The four-time All-Star was reportedly upset when he didn’t call a foul after missing a shot.
Dallas trailed 125-122 when Doncic received a pass under the basket and the layup bounced behind the rim. Doncic gestured after the Mavericks stopped the clock for a foul.RELATED
The NBA said the fine was for “inappropriate and unprofessional gestures towards game officials.”
Officials did not award him a gesturing technical foul. Doncic has been a consistent referee, with one technical foul on his way to reaching 16 in the season, leading to a one-game suspension.
Mavs owner Mark Cuban said he plans to protest a loss to the Warriors on a late-third-quarter drive that led to a layup by Golden State’s Kevin Rooney.
The Mavericks believed they were in possession of the ball after timeouts and prepared to attack. The Warriors served the other side without defense, leading to an easy layup for Rooney and putting Golden State up 90-87 where he was.
Before the timeout, official Andy Nagy signaled the Warriors had possession after the ball went out of bounds, but he quickly pointed to the Dallas bench and signaled a timeout.
