Macy’s Will Release Business Model At Mayagüez Mall

Faced with the challenges that retail retailers face, department store chains seek to evolve and adapt better to the tastes and needs of their consumers, and Macy’s is one of them.

Sources of El Nuevo Día, who preferred not to be identified, indicated that the chain is preparing to open a third establishment in Puerto Rico and the place chosen is the Mayagüez Mall.

The chain did not want to comment, but the management of the mall did confirm it. "Macy’s goes to the Mayagüez Mall and the opening will be in October," said Sandra Fernández, spokesman for the mall.

Asked about whether it will be a traditional department store or other concept, Fernández said “the only thing I can tell you is that it is a new business model that Macy's is working and is the first worldwide, and it will be in Puerto Rico , in the Mayagüez Mall ”.

He clarified that the new establishment will not be a ‘outlet’ store. It will be 3,386 square feet and will be close to the central atrium, in the corridor that leads to the Sears department chain, which is one of the anchor stores of the Mayagüezano mall.

Macy’s entered Puerto Rico in October 2000 when Plaza Las Américas made its third and largest expansion so far, at a cost of $ 300 million and in which it added 100 stores to its commercial offer. The Plaza Macy’s is 255,000 square feet; The second opened at Plaza del Caribe in Ponce in October 2015 and is the third anchor of the mall. It has two levels and 150,000 square feet.

The Macy's Inc. company generated sales of $ 24,971 million in 2018. The corporation, based in Ohio and New York, has 130,000 employees and 680 department stores under the names Macy's and Bloomingdale's distributed in 43 states, the District of Columbia , Guam and Puerto Rico. In addition, it has 190 specialty stores, such as Bloomingdale’s The Outlet, Bluemercury and Macy’s Backstage. In Dubai and Kuwait there are Bloomingdale’s stores that operate under license.
