Both the state and the Mexican federation are working in the area to determine the origin of the fault and avoid putting people at risk, Beatriz Manrique Guevara, head of the Ministry of the Environment, Sustainable Development and Land Management, declared at a press conference.

So far, the sinkhole is about a hundred meters in diameter, another 20 meters deep, and it continues to grow.

In Santa María Zacatepec , about 119 kilometers from Mexico City , the Sánchez family was surprised last Saturday afternoon by a loud noise that at first thought it was lightning but discovered that it was actually the land that was it was sinking.

“It is a matter of enormous risk. I tell our puebla citizens and the people of the region that we are going to be aware that there are no human tragedies. It is a geological fault that must be addressed with great care, with technique and with all the necessary prevention and we are doing it, “explained the governor of the state of Puebla, Miguel Barbosa, at a press conference on Monday.

The phenomenon was presented in the auxiliary board of Santa María Zacatepec, and according to the state authority, it has had “an exponential growth”, since in 24 hours it went from being 5 meters in diameter to 30 meters and then 60 meters.

The hole in the ground has already exceeded 80 meters in diameter in a field in Puebla , Mexico.

This impressive hole in the ground is filled with water and surrounded by countryside .

Since it was discovered, the authorities have been surrounding the area for fear of what could happen to the neighbors and the curious people who come to see it and take a picture of it with their phones.

They initially observe two possible causes: a softening of the farmland, or due to the extraction of water from the aquifers that prevail in the area as it is near the Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl volcanoes but the geohydric study will take 30 days to complete.

“The hole in the ground began with about five meters in diameter and grew in a few hours” explained the Secretary of the Environment for the Mexico region , Beatriz Manrique.

The sinkhole was half way last Sunday about 30 meters in diameter, while Monday and it had expanded to about 60 and Tuesday authorities had certified that exceeded 80 meters.

As it grows older, it advances more and more towards the Sánchez family’s house, which is already very close to being dragged by this huge hole.

Civil Protection of Puebla traveled to the area together with other authorities to make sure that no one approaches and risks are not taken.

The Sanchez family has lived there since 2014. The sinkhole is guarded by the authorities. “ We got this, we stayed on the street . We do not have anything. We are not from here, nor do we have relatives, we are alone, ” Heriberto Sánchez told the press with great concern .

So far, scientists and authorities are trying to determine the origin of the great hole and among the hypotheses there is talk of a geological fault or hydric variations in the soil.

“We have been seeing landslides through drone overflights, it is a phenomenon of nature, surely landslides will continue to occur,” said the Secretary of the Interior of Puebla, Ana Lucía Gil .

As the sinkhole grows, large pieces of dirt from the edge continuously break off and fall into it, scaring onlookers who approach the security tape that protects the area.

“Faced with the formation of a sinkhole in the farmland of Santa María Zacatepec, in Juan C. Bonilla, Puebla Department of the Interior, through this coordination, urges the population NOT to approach the place in order to avoid accidents”, wrote Civil Protection of the state on Twitter.

For its part, Civil Protection Mexico shared in it an image of the work that is being carried out in the place and detailed that it is working to “mitigate the risk to the population.”

They added that a preventive evacuation of a house near the sinkhole was carried out and that a 1,640-foot security fence is maintained around the hole.
