Carolina Panthers head coach Matt Rule has vowed for weeks that he won’t rush to announce a winner in the race between Sam Darnold and Baker Mayfield to start quarterback jobs.
That hasn’t changed even days before he plays his second preseason game. At this point, Rule wanted to resolve the situation.
Rhule said Wednesday that nothing is more important than being satisfied that you have collected all the information you need to make a decision.

“I think what I’ve been saying all along is that we wanted to at least get to this point where we know when we do,” Rule said of his second match against New England. said after the joint practice of
“So anytime. It could be two more weeks from now. It could be now… I’m not saying two weeks from now. I’m just saying that we’re making sure we’re thorough.” .”
Mayfield and Darnold shared replays with the first team over the past two days. The former would have commanded the offense better overall and succeeded in an 11-11 stretch against the New England defense.
However, Darnold has hinted at why the New York Jets selected him 3rd overall in the 2018 Draft, including making a seemingly lost play to DJ Moore behind the zone. Turn it into a touchdown pass.
“We’re both doing everything we can to win the job,” Darnold said.
Neither quarterback is compensated with an outright offense. RB Christian McCaffrey has a limited workload, as do receivers Robbie Anderson and Terrace Marshall Jr.
Still, Rule was impressed with what he saw.
“I think we both played a lot,” he said. “They haven’t intercepted a lot and have defended the ball well. It’s a critical situation, Red. I think there is.”
The rules said Friday’s preseason game against New England will mostly use second- and third-team players.
