PARIS (AP) – Monaco crushed Saint-Etienne 4-0 on Friday to move one point behind defending French league champions Paris Saint-Germain and title rival Lyon. ahead of their showdown this weekend.
Monaco, who have lost only once in 17 games, remain in contention for the league title.
Lyon and PSG have the same number of points, but the Parisian team occupies the 2nd position on goal difference.
Stevan Jovetic got an unusual start for Monaco as striker Wissam Ben Yedder took a break.
The vivacious Jovetic slammed a 20-meter shot off the crossbar, hit the post from 11 steps and put Monaco in front with a crisp low shot, all in the first 13 minutes of the match.
Monaco extended their lead in the 55th minute when midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni hit a shot just inside the penalty area after a great pass from Russia’s Aleksandr Golovin.
Midfielder Sofiane Diop scored another goal at 65 and striker Krepin Diatta sealed the victory at 76.
