New Initiative To Start With Offers – NBC New York (47)

The boutique studios are gearing up for New York City’s first-ever NYC Fitness Week, an opportunity for residents to try out new classes while reinvigorating the fitness industry during the recovery from the COVID pandemic.

New Yorkers can choose from dozens of participating gyms across the five boroughs with hundreds of classes to shop for buy one get one free deals during the week of June 5-12. Once the class is purchased during NYC Fitness Week, it can be attended at any time during the month.

The new initiative was created by Debra Strougo, a partner at Fitizens Holdings and founder of Row House, and Brian Chappon, founder and CEO of CENTERED Wellness. The measure starts in New York City and the plan is to expand to other important areas, such as Los Angeles, Miami and Toronto, within the Global Fitness Week series.

Strougo previously worked in the tourism industry at NYC & Company and was involved in the launch of Broadway Week and Restaurant Week.

While the idea was always there to include a week dedicated to boosting the fitness industry, it wasn’t until December of last year that the ball first started rolling. The series of events is controlled by CENTERED Wellness, a technology platform focused on wellness.

As of March 2020, 25% of all health and fitness facilities have closed and 30% of studios have closed, according to a study by The Global Health & Fitness Association, which also indicated that more than 1.5 million job positions were lost. I work in the industry.

Solidcore is a Pilates-inspired, class-based, full-body workout studio with ten locations spread across the counties. It’s just one of numerous fitness companies still reeling from the setbacks of the pandemic.

“We went from having one of the best months in our company’s history to closing all of our locations in 23 states and the District of Columbia overnight and our revenue was down to zero, having to lay off 98% of our the people who work for the company,” said Bryan Myers, president and CEO of Solidcore.

For Myers, the start of NYC Fitness Week takes on another meaning, not only attracting old guests, but also welcoming newcomers who want to get in on the fitness game. For Solidcore, Myers says customers “move with their feet” and prefer the classic brick-and-mortar experience.

While the fitness industry has moved toward digital-only and hybrid class offerings, both Strougo and Myers note a need for in-person connections and a sense of greater community.

“We know that fitness centers, studios, and gyms have been a place where people feel that community. Where they get out of their apartments or living situations, see other people, and break free from stress or isolation,” he said. Strougo, who hopes the mental health benefits will come to the fore when talking about the fitness community.
