MANCHESTER, England (AP) — Police are investigating a disturbance in which a teenager was injured at the Etihad Stadium during Manchester City’s 3-2 victory over Liverpool in the English League Cup.
A 15-year-old girl needs to be treated for a head injury, a fan was arrested for disorderly conduct that exacerbated racism, and some disabled fans were accused of racism during Thursday night’s game. I was attacked verbally.
RELATEDManchester Metropolitan Police said Friday that two men had been arrested on suspicion of trying to bring fireworks onto the pitch, and a 53-year-old man was hospitalized after being assaulted outside the stadium after the game.
Police are reviewing CCTV camera footage, said Gareth Parkin, the Metropolitan Police Department official.
“It recognizes a variety of objects, such as coins and smoke bombs thrown during a match,” Parkin added.
Minors were treated at the stadium.
“Obviously, throwing objects into tight spaces is dangerous and can have serious, sometimes devastating, consequences,” Parkin said. I wish him a speedy recovery.”
The riots occurred despite attempts by both clubs to improve fan behavior at matches.
Both teams released a joint statement saying they were “deeply disappointed by some of the totally unacceptable incidents that occurred during last night’s game.”
Both clubs claimed to be working with police to find those responsible for the incident.
“Liverpool FC and Manchester City FC are committed to working together to eradicate these problems in the game. They have no place in football,” they repeated.
