Released By Mistake a Latino Sentenced To Die In Prison For Rape And Abuse Of Children

The Georgia Department of Prisons reported Monday the release by mistake of a Latino prisoner serving a sentence in Rogers state prison.

Tony Maycon Muñoz Méndez, 31, had been sentenced to life imprisonment for rape and aggravated abuse of minors committed in Gwinnett County, outside Atlanta, in March 2010.

He had been imprisoned since April 2015, but for reasons not yet disclosed he was released by mistake at noon on Friday, state authorities reported Monday.

"All resources are being used to ensure a quick capture of Muñoz Méndez," said Prison Department spokeswoman Lori Benoit.

The fugitive is five feet nine inches tall, weighs 186 pounds, and has brown eyes and hair, according to authorities, who urge him to approach him or try to stop him on his own.
