MOSCOW (AP) – Russia reported more than 25,000 new coronavirus infections on Sunday, the most s ince January, after a sharp increase in the country last month.

The special team to combat COVID-19 indicated that 663 patients died, a figure slightly less than the 697 the day before, a number that set a maximum record.

The record of 25,142 new cases was more than 2.5 times higher than the number of daily infections in the first days of June. Moscow, St. Petersburg and the region around Moscow account for about half of the total number of cases nationwide.

Although the Kremlin says authorities have no plans to order a lockdown, Moscow has imposed restrictions, including requiring restaurant and bar patrons to show a code that certifies that they have been vaccinated or tested negative on a PCR diagnostic test.

Russia has recorded a total of 5.61 million infections and 137,925 deaths throughout the pandemic.
