Spain Summons The Moroccan Ambassador For Some Statements By Its Prime Minister On Ceuta And Melilla

The Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Cristina Gallach, today urgently summoned the Moroccan ambassador to Spain, Karima Benyaich, to clarify the statements of her prime minister, Saadeddine El Ohmani, who has assured that Ceuta and Melilla “are Moroccan like the Sahara. “

The Secretary of State has informed Ambassador Benyaich that Spain expects from all its partners to respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of our country and has asked her for explanations about the words of El Othmani.

The Moroccan Prime Minister’s claim came after On December 10, US President Donald Trump recognized the kingdom’s sovereignty over Western Sahara.

El Othmani gave an interview to an Egyptian network, when he said that “the day will come when we are going to reopen the matter of Ceuta and Melilla, Moroccan territories like the Sahara.”

Pablo Casado, as leader of the opposition, has requested the government’s action through Twitter to defend “national territorial integrity.” The PP leader also blames the Moroccan Prime Minister’s statements on the division of opinions within the Government on the conflict in Western Sahara.
