Cruz was one of the leading Republican voices even before running for president in 2016. In more recent years, he has positioned himself as a key ally of Donald Trump with a view to a second attempt to occupy the White House.

The Texas senator, who went so far as to describe Trump as a “pathological liar,” advocated the then-president’s call to prevent last month’s certification of Democrat Joe Biden’s election victory. That stance prompted calls for Cruz’s resignation after a mob stormed the Capitol as Congress was about to ratify Biden’s triumph.
