Former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has been formally charged with forcible touching, a minor sexual offense, in a court in Albany, the New York state capital. The politician resigned as governor last August after being accused by several women in his work environment of sexual harassment and inappropriate behavior.
According to several local media, a spokesman for the Albany court, Lucian Chalfen, was the one who confirmed the complaint and indicated that “shortly” a censored copy of the lawsuit will be available, since it is a sex crime.RELATED
The complaint says that the former governor “intentionally, and without any legitimate purpose, put his hand under the victim’s shirt and into his intimate part of the body,” according to reports. The New York Times. “The purpose was to degrade [a la víctima] and gratify sexual desires [de Cuomo]”, says the text.
Following the filing of the complaint, the governor will have to appear in court for a preliminary hearing on November 17, according to a press release on behalf of Albany County Sheriff Craig Apple.
Despite resigning as governor, Cuomo has always maintained his innocence in the face of the accusations leveled against him, although he has apologized if he has ever bothered someone with his “close” character.
The lawsuit comes more than two months after one of his former employees, Britanny Commisso, filed a complaint against him with the Albany County Sheriff’s Office, who in turn would have taken the lawsuit to court. Commisso said that, late last year, Cuomo touched her breast when the two were alone in his office.
The governor’s fall from grace was precipitated, after ten years in office and a lifetime dedicated to politics, when the New York Attorney General’s Office presented a detailed report in which it concluded that he had sexually harassed 11 women. Several of them spoke publicly since the end of 2020 about their experiences.
Following the report, Cuomo was widely criticized by numerous political figures, including from his own party, including US President Joe Biden, who said publicly that he believed he should resign.
Until then, Cuomo had been one of the most popular political figures in the United States and went on to receive an Emmy award for the daily press conferences he gave during the peak of the pandemic in New York, although the award was later withdrawn.
