US media released on Wednesday a copy of a letter that President Donald Trump sent to his Turkish pair, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, on October 9 regarding the crisis over the Turkish offensive against the Kurds in northeastern Syria.
The White House confirmed the truthfulness of the letter, at a time when Trump is trying to reduce the political damage that his decision to withdraw from US troops from northern Syria could generate, which was read as a way to clear the way for the Turkish incursion against the (former) Kurdish allies of the United States.
In the letter, the president tries to persuade Erdogan not to enter Syria, a decision that the Turk had transmitted to Trump in a phone call on October 6.RELATED
"Let's make a good deal!" Trump said. "You don't want to be responsible for killing thousands of people, and I don't want to be responsible for destroying the Turkish economy, and I will."
According to local media, the Trump administration issued the letter with the aim of refusing the idea that the US gave Turkey a green light to invade Syria. Many lawmakers have been very critical of their decision to withdraw US forces from the conflict zone.
“I have worked hard to solve some of your problems. Do not disappoint the world. You can make a great deal, ”the American tells the Turk in the letter.
The president wrote that the commander of the Syrian Democratic Forces led by the Kurds, General Mazloum Kobani Abdi, was willing to negotiate and even make some concessions.
In addition, he added that he confidentially sent Erdogan a copy of a letter that Mazloum had sent him.
"History will look at you favorably if you do this in the right and humane way. It will look at you forever as the devil if good things don't happen. Don't be a tough guy. Don't be silly!" Trump wrote, adding: "You I'll call later".
On Wednesday, Trump had said that the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) is probably a greater "terrorist threat" than the Islamic State jihadist organization (ISIS), also amid criticism for the withdrawal of US troops in Syria.
“I did not give it a green light. When you say something like that it is misleading. It was the opposite of a green light. To begin with, we hardly had any soldiers there. The biggest game had already taken place, ”Trump said, hours before Vice President Mike Pence traveled to meet Erdogan with a view to trying to stop the fire in Syria.
“Those of the PKK are not angels. ISIS respects the PKK. You know why? Because the PKK can be tougher, ”said Trump, who this week approved a series of economic sanctions against Turkey.
Almost simultaneously, US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said he will impose more economic sanctions on Turkey if he does not agree to a cease-fire in his military offensive against the Kurds: "Additional sanctions will come if they do not institute a cease-fire", He told reporters.
The complete transcript of Donald Trump's letter of October 9:
President of the Republic of Turkey Ankara
Dear Mr. President:
Let's work in a good agreement! You do not want to be responsible for the killing of thousands of people, and I do not want to be responsible for the destruction of Turkey's economy – and I will be. I have given you a small sample recently regarding Pastor Brunson.
I have worked hard to solve some of your problems. Do not disappoint the world. You can make a great deal. General Mazloum wants to work with you, and is willing to make concessions that they have never made in the past. I am confidentially sending you a copy of a letter from you that I just received.
History will look favorably on you if you solve this in the right and humane way. But he will look at you forever as the devil if good things do not happen. Don't be a tough guy. Do not be silly!
