Washington – The United States Department of Justice sued Texas today for its new electoral map, claiming that it discriminates against Hispanics and blacks.
The lawsuit, filed in the western district of Texas, alleges that the delimitation violates part of the Voting Rights Act.
He points out that the vast majority of Texas population growth in the past decade has been black, Hispanic or Asian and that the new maps do not give those communities a greater opportunity to elect their own representatives.
RELATEDInstead, the new maps circumscribe black and Hispanic communities into irregularly shaped districts – one district in Dallas has a “seahorse” signature, the document says – while keeping intact districts where Republicans have a strong most.
