The outgoing president of Guatemala, Jimmy Morales, asked on December 17 to the US ruler, Donald Trump, a total of one hundred thousand visas for workers and clarification of the death of migrant children in detention centers in that country. In addition to that, he asked that new Guatemalan agricultural products be contemplated by the US government. This was reported by the Government of Guatemala in a statement, following the meeting between Morales and Trump at the White House.

The meeting was in the oval office. Morales was accompanied by Sandra Jovel, chancellor; Enrique Degenhart, Minister of the Interior; Mario Duarte, Secretary of Intelligence, and Manuel Espina, Ambassador of Guatemala to the United States, said Alfredo Brito, Secretary of Communication of the Guatemalan Presidency.

On the other side of the table were Mike Pence, vice president; Mike Pompeo, secretary of state; Chad Wolf, interim secretary of National Security; Mike Mulvaney, chief of staff;
Roberto O'Brien, assistant to the president in security; Jared Kushner, assistant and adviser to the president; Stephen Miller, assistant and political advisor, and Mauricio Claver-Carone, director for Western Hemisphere Affairs of the United States National Security Council, according to Brito.

After the meeting, the rulers made a statement to the press.

“We have an excellent relationship with Guatemala. We have the issue of the border and it is the agreement we have signed and it is something very positive not only for Guatemala but for the United States. The issue of illegal immigrants – undocumented immigrants – that we cannot accept, is something that is being carried out, it is something that has slowed down. We have excellent relations with El Salvador and Honduras. With Mexico it has 27,000 soldiers on the border to protect the border. We are building the wall. We have one hundred miles and by the end of 2020 we expect to have 400 miles. We are doing the work we promised. Relations with Guatemala also refer not only to migration but also to trade. Guatemala buys materials, military equipment and something that will happen in the future, ”said a translator regarding Trump's statements.

“Relations with Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras, in previous governments, refused to receive the people we sent and therefore ended up with highly dangerous people. In this administration we have signed agreements and therefore they are receiving with open arms. We are actually getting rid of the most dangerous people. We do not want them here. They are highly dangerous people. And we are returning them for thousands, ”added the translator.

For his part, Morales said: “For us it is a real honor to be here in the United States with our main partner and ally in commercial and security matters. We are very interested in turning all migration issues into a legal issue that under no circumstances puts the lives of minors and vulnerable populations at risk. We have signed agreements with the United States for our agricultural workers and perhaps some areas such as construction. ”

According to a note from the Guatemalan Executive, senior executives of the US government thanked Morales for managing actions in favor of good governance in Guatemala and northern Central America.

Add the note that Trump recognized the leadership at the time of making "brave" decisions such as the Asylum Cooperation Agreement and the frontal fight against drug trafficking. Trump said, according to the same note from the Guatemalan official press, that our country has been the best partner in Central America to face transnational structures of organized crime, especially those dedicated to drug trafficking.
