The Spanish Society of Internal Medicine (SEMI) has put its recertification project in the 42nd National Congress to implement it throughout 2022, as long as the Ministry of Health does not carry out a recertification agreed with all scientific societies.

“We live in a changing world and knowledge also changes. For this reason, we must guarantee the quality of care and that internists have the necessary skills and knowledge according to the moment. And this is ensured with a document that certifies that this is the case ”, said Jesús Díez Manglano, president of SEMI, during a joint intervention with Mª Montserrat Chimeno Viñas, second vice president, and Rafael Monte Secades, head of the Internship Service at the Hospital Lucus Augusti.

The idea of the SEMI is to create a culture of recertification that they see as necessary to promote now, while the authorities do not finish implementing an issue that has been talked about for a long time. “We propose something possible and achievable for all internists. Both those who are in reference hospitals and regional ones, or those that focus more on research than on clinical practice ”, says Díez Manglano.

As detailed by the president of SEMI, the “spirit” of the project is to reflect the updating effort through a “simple and easily understandable” process. In addition, it is proposed to carry out initially every ten years (about three rectifications throughout the career); respect the autonomy of the professional in the organization of their continuing training activities; conduct a peer review; and that it does not entail an economic cost to the internist.

What will be the requirements to access SEMI recertification?

All those health professionals who want to access recertification must meet the following parameters: Have a degree approved or validated by the authorities in Spain. Have a seniority as a member of more than three years and be up to date with payment of fees. Accept the rules established in the recertification system. Not be convicted or have legal and / or ethical sanctions that impede the development of the profession. Justify the merits claimed in the recertification process. At least 9 years have elapsed since obtaining the specialist title or since the last recertification process.

“We propose an achievable recertification for all internists”

What will the areas to value be like and how much will each add up to?

“The areas that we will assess will be mainly assistance, a job where what is known is demonstrated and ongoing training. To a lesser extent, teaching, research and other aspects such as management will be taken into account ”, explains Díez Manglano.

To achieve recertification, at least 80 of the 150 points at stake must be achieved, and a minimum of 30 must be obtained in the two main areas. The care activity will be distributed as follows:

For each year of work in a ward of Internal Medicine hospitalization: 1.5 points For each year of work as Head of Service: 1.5 For each year of work in Internship guards (minimum 2 per month): 1.5 For each year of work in a full-time internship: 1.5 For each year of part-time work in a medical practice: 1 Continuing education will be distributed as follows: By university Master’s degree: 25 By university expert course: 5 For each continuing education credit accredited by the Commission for Continuing Education in the Health Professions: 1 For each continuing education credit of the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS): 2 Teaching will be as follows: For each year As a full professor or professor: 3 For each year as an associate professor in health sciences: 1 For each year as a tutor of Internal Medicine resident physicians: 2 For the director of a university master’s degree and / or a SEMI master’s degree: 2 For each cad for a presentation at a National or Autonomous Congress or meeting of a SEMI work group: 1 For each hour of teaching in a course accredited by the CFCPS (maximum 2 points per course): 0.5 Research: Doctorate: 5 Direct a doctoral thesis : 3 For the first, second, last author of a scientific article included in PuBMed: 1 For another author of a scientific article included in PubMed: 0.5 For each presentation in a National, regional or SEMI working group meeting: 1 For the first, second, last author of a communication to an international congress (it must be organized by an international society): 0.5 Per book chapter: 1 Per principal investigator in a competitive project (FIS, European Union): 3 Other aspects: For each year of membership in a clinical commission: 0.5 Per reviewer in journals included in PubMed (for each article): 0.5 For belonging to the organizing or scientific committee of a National Congress: 1 For each year as member of the editorial committee rial of an indented journal in PubMed, RECCMI or Span J Med: 0.5 For each year as a SEMI work group coordinator: 1 For each year as a member of the SEMI Board of Directors or an autonomous society of Internal Medicine: 1 In addition, they must have training in at least three areas of the more than 20 recognized by SEMI.
