Justin Verlander threw a one-run ball in the eighth inning for a career-high 14 wins this season, as the Houston Astros defeated the Seattle Mariners 11-1 on Friday to lead the majors.
Cuban Arredomis Diaz hit several home runs, while compatriot Jordan Alvarez hit his 30th home run of the season.
Verlander (14-3) allowed one run and allowed five hits in 7 2/3 innings. He beat out last year’s American League Cy Young winner, Robbie Ray, with his five strikeouts.

Verlander allowed just 3 earned runs in 4 starts and 26 2/3 innings in July. The 39-year-old right-hander, Tommy, in his first season returning from John surgery, allowed his one earned run or less in six straight starts.
The Astros scored three runs in the third inning, putting an end to Ray (8-8). Ray allowed singles from Cuba’s Yuri Gurriel and Alvarez and a two-run double from Alex Bregman.
For the Mariners, Dominican Rodriguez scored 4-2 and Carlos Santana scored 4-1. Venezuela’s Eugenio Suarez 3-0, Abraham Toro 1-0.
For the Astros, Venezuela’s Jose Altuve scored 3-0. Cuban Gurriel scored two in his 4-2, Alvarez scored two in his 3-3 and he had two RBI, Diaz he scored two in his 5-3 and he had two RBI. Dominica’s Jeremy Peña 3-0 RBI. Honduras’ Mauricio Dubon scored one, two in his 3-2. Puerto Rico’s Martin Maldonado 3-0.
