Williams Retirement: ‘The Countdown Has Begun’

NEW YORK (AP) — Serena Williams says the countdown has “started” and is ready to quit tennis after winning 23 Grand Slams, having another child and running a business.

In an article distributed by Vogue magazine and his Instagram account on Tuesday, Williams did not disclose when he would retire.


“There comes a time in life when you have to decide to change direction. It’s a tough time when you really love what you’re doing. I love tennis. But now the countdown has begun,” Williams said. said on Instagram. “I have to focus on being a mother, on my spiritual needs, and finally on discovering another, but equally amazing Selena. I really want to enjoy my next few weeks.”

“I turn 41 this month and there are some things I have to put aside,” Williams wrote.

He added that he doesn’t like the word retirement and prefers to think of himself as at a stage in life where he is “getting away from tennis and devoting himself to other things that are important to him.”

“I’ve suffered a lot. It’s harder than I imagined. I hate it. I hate being at this crossroads,” he lamented, hinting at his retirement. “I always say to myself, ‘I wish it was easier, but it’s not.’ it’s finished.”

Williams is taking part in a tournament on Toronto’s hard courts in preparation for the US Open, the last major tournament of the year.

The American has won more Grand Slam tournaments than any other player in his professional career. Margaret has added 24 of his coats, some from his amateur days.
